Verses 4-16 GROUP_1545 76.4-16
4
إِنَّا أَعْتَدْنَا لِلْكَافِرِينَ سَلَاسِلَا وَأَغْلَالًا وَسَعِيرًا
[Now,] behold, for those who deny the truth, We have prepared chains, iron collars and a blazing fire, but
5
إِنَّ الْأَبْرَارَ يَشْرَبُونَ مِن كَأْسٍ كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا كَافُورًا
the righteous shall drink from a cup mixed with the coolness of kafur,a
6
عَيْنًا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا عِبَادُ اللَّهِ يُفَجِّرُونَهَا تَفْجِيرًا
a spring from which God’s servants will drink, making it gush forth in branches.
7
يُوفُونَ بِالنَّذْرِ وَيَخَافُونَ يَوْمًا كَانَ شَرُّهُ مُسْتَطِيرًا
They keep their vows and fear a day the woe of which will spread far and wide;
8
وَيُطْعِمُونَ الطَّعَامَ عَلَى حُبِّهِ مِسْكِينًا وَيَتِيمًا وَأَسِيرًا
they give food, despite their love for it, to the poor and orphans and captives,
9
إِنَّمَا نُطْعِمُكُمْ لِوَجْهِ اللَّهِ لَا نُرِيدُ مِنكُمْ جَزَاء وَلَا شُكُورًا
saying, ‘We feed you for the sake of God alone, we seek neither recompense nor thanks from you.
10
إِنَّا نَخَافُ مِن رَّبِّنَا يَوْمًا عَبُوسًا قَمْطَرِيرًا
Truly, we fear from our Lord a woefully grim Day.’
11
فَوَقَاهُمُ اللَّهُ شَرَّ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ وَلَقَّاهُمْ نَضْرَةً وَسُرُورًا
Therefore, God will ward off from them the woes of that Day, and make them find brightness and joy,
12
وَجَزَاهُم بِمَا صَبَرُوا جَنَّةً وَحَرِيرًا
and their reward for being patient will be a Garden and silk [clothing].
13
مُتَّكِئِينَ فِيهَا عَلَى الْأَرَائِكِ لَا يَرَوْنَ فِيهَا شَمْسًا وَلَا زَمْهَرِيرًا
Reclining upon couches, they will find therein neither the heat of the sun nor bitter, biting cold,
14
وَدَانِيَةً عَلَيْهِمْ ظِلَالُهَا وَذُلِّلَتْ قُطُوفُهَا تَذْلِيلًا
the shading branches of trees will come down low over them, and their clusters of fruit, will hang down where they are the easiest to reach.
15
وَيُطَافُ عَلَيْهِم بِآنِيَةٍ مِّن فِضَّةٍ وَأَكْوَابٍ كَانَتْ قَوَارِيرَا
Vessels of silver and goblets of pure crystal will be passed round among them
16
قَوَارِيرَ مِن فِضَّةٍ قَدَّرُوهَا تَقْدِيرًا
and gleaming silver goblets which have been filled to the exact measure,

Commentary
(a) Camphor—a sweet smelling herb. (b) Man has been created free in this world and then he has been shown two paths leading respectively towards a life of gratitude and a life of ingratitude. Now, it is for the concerned person to choose either of the two paths. For one who adopts the way of ingratitude, there will be the punishment of Hell in the Hereafter, and for one who adopts the way of gratitude, there will be the bounties of Paradise.
